*1992 Porsche 968* After the Porsche 912 and 914 went out of production in the mid-1970s, Porsche needed a new entry level vehicle to slot in below the brand’s 911 halo car. Instead of using air cooled engines mounted behind the driver, Porsche developed a 4 cylinder front-engined car with a hatchback rear known as the 924. Known for its neutral handling thanks to a rear transaxle setup, the 924 evolved into the 944 and the design culminated with the 968 which was produced between 1992 and 1995. This 1992 Porsche 968 Coupe is one of approximately 649 sold in North America for that year and has been under the care of just one owner from new. Finished in Black, this 968 shows 88,587 miles at the time of cataloging and has been kept in exceptional condition throughout. The consignor purchased the car new at Barrier Porsche on March 5th 1992 and it has been part of his Porsche collection since. The 968 is a unique combination of design elements from many of Porsche’s prior transaxle cars, but updated to fit the 1990s design language the brand was moving towards. Although it retained the flared fenders the 944 was known for, the entire body was smoothed out, and in lieu of the hide-away pop-up headlights, a set of 928-style exposed headlamps were fitted that would pop upright when activated. The car sits on a set of 16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps that sit in front of 4-wheel Brembo ventilated disc brakes. Although the 968 was still considered the “starter” Porsche in 1992, the interior was still finished to a very high standard. Black leather covers both the front and rear seats and the dashboard layout is nearly identical to what you would find in a contemporary 964 generation 911. As opposed to the 911 where you sit more perched upright, working the pedals from above, in the 968, your legs are stretched out in front of you in a more traditional sports car style. The original Porsche/Alpine CD stereo is fitted in the center console with 10-speakers and the car is fitted with great options for touring like cruise control and air conditioning. One of the things that is so great about the design of these transaxle Porsche is that, in addition to carrying four people, the rear hatch swallows up a tremendous amount of luggage for a weekend away, or a shopping cart’s worth on a trip to your local grocery store. Powering the 968 is a 3.0-liter inline 4 with dual overhead cams that produces 236 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This is one of the largest inline-4s produced in modern times and utilizes counter-rotating balance shafts to ensure it is smooth and refined. Power is sent through a 6-speed manual transaxle with a limited slip differential, to the rear wheels. Top speed for the 968 is reportedly 157 mph and the 0-60 sprint happens in less than 6.5 seconds. What the transaxle cars are renowned for is their 50/50 weight distribution which makes them quite tossable and predictable to drive on windy roads. The 968 is a real rarity in the United States with less than 4,500 cars brought in between 1992 and 1995 with nearly half of those being cabriolets. Seeing one on the road is definitely an event for the Porsche faithful and finding one that has been as well kept by a single, local owner since new is quite uncommon. If you have ever wanted to experience the ultimate iteration of the legendary transaxle series of Porsches, this 968 is a great entry into that world. *Key Features* * 1 Local Owner From New * Purchased 3/5/1992 at Barrier Porsche * Black Over Black Color Combination * 3.0-Liter Inline 4 * 236 Horsepower * 225 Lb-Ft of Torque * 6-Speed Manual Transaxle * Limited Slip Differential * 50/50 Weight Distribution * Porsche Hi-Fi Stereo * Porsche/Alpine Head Unit * 10-Speaker * Cruise Control * Power Windows/Door Locks * Power Sunroof * Rear Window Wiper * Rear Spoiler *Additional Information* * Books with Stamps * Maintenance Manual, Warranty Booklet, Radio Code Card * Service Invoices For more information on this 1992 Porsche 968 or any of our 100+ High-Performance, Exotic and Special Interest cars always in stock, contact one of our friendly and knowledgeable sales consultants or always feel free to drop by our 40,000+ sq ft of Indoor Showrooms in Bellevue, WA - Home to a Most Exciting Inventory of Luxury, Exotic, High Performance and Collectible Automobiles.
