1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Spider Veloce, Pininfarina- One of just 1,091 Giulia 1600 Spider Veloces produced.- Beneficiary of a just-completed restoration to original specs.- Accompanied by a letter from Alfa Romeo confirming its factory colors.- Retains its original numbers-matching engine.Alfa Romeo announced the Giulia in 1962. The Giulietta remained in production, but it was now viewed as an economical alternative designed to appeal to a wider market segment. Externally, the most noticeable and distinctive element of the Giulia Spider over its predecessors, was the imitation air intake on the bonnet. It gave the car a touch of aggressiveness to its already classic Pininfarina coachwork. The new bonnet was necessitated by the greater height of the engine crankcase. The Giulia was endowed with upgraded mechanicals, too, including an alloy twin-cam 92hp 1570cc 4-cylinder engine. The Giulia retained all the benefits of its lesser sibling, the Giulietta, albeit with greater torque at low revs.Veloce models, first appearing in 1964, offered 112hp thanks to modifications which included two Weber twin-choke carburetors and a 9.7:1 compression ratio. The smooth shifting, all-synchro manual transmission boasts five forward speeds compared to the previous four, and front disc brakes were fitted to improve stopping power. The nimble-handling suspension is comprised of front upper and lower A-arms with coil springs and a live rear axle with aluminum center section and leaf spring suspension. Top speed was quoted at 110mph. The Giulietta-Giulia line represented the mainstream of Alfa Spider production through the middle-1960's.Road & Track summed up the new Giulia nicely. The 1600 Veloce . . . its Weber-fed engine leaps eagerly up into the meaty high-revolution range, and even pulls well further down the tachometer. This extra strength, controlled by the superb five-speed all-synchromesh transmission, makes the car much better suited than before to increasingly fierce U.S. traffic conditions. One of just 1,091 produced, this Giulia is the beneficiary of a just-completed and meticulously executed rotisserie restoration. It has been restored to its original combination of Nero over a red leather interior with black carpets highlighted by red bindings. A letter from Alfa Romeo confirms the original color combination and that the Giulia retains its original numbers-matching engine.
